Along the Way
Lanette Freitag, a fiber artist, wanted to find a way to use the wool from sheep, llamas, and alpacas raised on her farm in Bourbon County. But to make felt products commercially she soon realized she’d have to make more of them more quickly than she could by hand. At the same time her husband Don, given his technical background, was looking for ways to ease the drudgery and simplify her job by finding a way for a machine to do some of the work. Such machines did exist but were too big and industrial for her purposes. After working with a company in North Carolina they managed to get a smaller scale machine that still needed further tweaking. As a result, the couple learned that all the while they were trying to find a market for felt products, the real niche is for the machine itself.
